INDIVIDUAL SERVICES
All individual services are custom designed to remove barriers to independence. Services fall into four “core” areas including:
1. ADVOCACY
2. PEER SUPPORT & COUNSELING
3. SKILLS TRAINING &
4. INFORMATION & REFERRAL
ADVOCACY IS…
Advocacy can be easily defined as an action that produces change. We speak out for the equality and civil rights of people with disabilities. We work directly on systems change and we also teach people with disabilities how to use “their voice” to secure their individual or group independence. Some “Advocacy” services we provide are:
- Making sure accessible parking laws are enforced
- Helping consumers write appeals for denial of services
- Working to ensure accessible housing
- Meeting with transportation officials to make sure they know and use the law.
PEER SUPPORT IS…
Basically peer support connects one person with a disability with one or more other people in a similar situation who has learned strategies to live life. Peer support is accomplished in both individual and group settings. This type of support fosters the growth and sharing of “insider” expertise. Peer support and counseling takes place at our center in the following ways:
- Youth Leaders in Action offers a monthly Peer Group opportunity
- Individual appointments with staff who experience disability on a daily basis
- Referrals to arrange involvement in local disability related groups
SKILLS TRAINING IS….
In a word, kills training is learning – or re-learning – how to be self-sufficient in today’s world. Through skills training, adults and youth with disabilities may acquire and develop the skills needed to live independently.
Empowerment is incorporated into each skill area a consumer decides is needed to increase their independence. The idea behind skills training is to use YOUR OWN abilities to increase your self-reliance and self-confidence.
Individual or group training on a variety of topics is available. Some examples include:
- Traveling and using public transportation
- Budgeting and money management
- Computer Skills
